Computer Monitors - How To Choose
Up until several years ago, computer monitors had remained pretty much the same. Computers have actually been around since the 1940’s and the original CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) technology has been the standard for computer monitors ever since computers needed to display graphics. While CPUs (Central Processing Units) have become much faster, hard drives much bigger, RAM (Random Access Memory) much more efficient, computer monitors have remained virtually unchanged for decades. Until now.
Don't misunderstand me though, computer monitors — the CRT type — have gotten better, but the underlying technology hasn't changed much. That has all changed with the advent of LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and plasma monitors. These flat panel monitors have caught up with the general advances in computer technology.
Computer Monitor Options
When considering a computer monitor today, you now have some options. The first option is, of course, the traditional CRT monitor. Even though there are better technologies available now (more on that later), CRT monitors should not be overlooked entirely. As of the end of 2007, they remain the cheapest computer monitors available. If you're trying to put together the most economical computer package possible, you may want to consider a CRT. The CRT technology is also fully evolved and does not suffer from some of the problems that the newer technologies are sometimes prone to. Also, CRT monitors have the fastest response time — video looks slightly better when up close.
The cons are:
- Large size
- Heavy to lift
- Require more power
- Poorer static picture quality
- And, emit much more radiation
LCD displays are now saturating the computer monitor market, and for good reason. LCD monitors are much smaller, require less power, provide a sharper static image and emit less radiation than CRTs. LCD displays have been the standard for laptop computer monitors since their inception and it is only a matter of time before they become the desktop standard as well. Although they are slightly more expensive than CRTs, the price of LCD monitors has dropped dramatically in the last couple of years.
Another option you have if you're looking to buy the latest and greatest computer monitor, is the plasma display. Plasma monitors are the high-end technology of computer displays and carry a considerable price tag. They provide a superior picture quality capable of high resolutions far greater than CRT or LCD monitors and are the best choice to display high definition graphics. While improving, plasma displays still suffer from a number of problems, one of which is a short life span, but if you've got the big bucks, they are definitely worth a look.
